Tim Ross is on the governing board of the Institute of Architects and says members overwhelmingly support upgraded standards. He says over glazing under shading and poor ventilation are to blame for overheating.

A lot of the buildings that people are complaining about are sort of constructed well before the H1 changes came into force, and it’s just to do with the fact that we don’t have anything in our building code which prevents over glazing and overheating. There’s a whole bunch of things that can be done, but the building code doesn’t require any level of energy modelling. It doesn’t need to be expensive, but there’s a learning curve initially to figure out how to do it in the first place once you know how to do it. And we’re talking a few hours to prepare an energy model which would predict overheating for a building.
